WHAT'S DIABETES ?

Diabetes is a chronic condition that affects the way your body processes glucose, the main source of energy for your body. Glucose comes from the foods you eat and is carried by your blood to the cells of your body. Insulin, a hormone produced by the pancreas, helps transport glucose into your cells.

There are two main types of diabetes: type 1 and type 2.

In type 1 diabetes, your immune system attacks and destroys the cells in your pancreas that produce insulin, so your body can no longer produce insulin. As a result, you need to take insulin injections or use an insulin pump to regulate your blood sugar levels.

In type 2 diabetes, your body becomes resistant to insulin, and over time your pancreas can no longer produce enough insulin to regulate your blood sugar levels effectively. Type 2 diabetes is often associated with obesity and a sedentary lifestyle.

Both types of diabetes can lead to serious health complications if not managed properly, such as heart disease, nerve damage, kidney disease, vision loss, and amputations.
